Starting October 1st you may start to notice new nutritional data labels on some of your foods, including produce and veggies. Since 2002 there has been a law on the books that would require a country of origin label to be placed on foods sold in grocery stores; recently that law was delayed and now Congress has amended the bill to include more foods. Score!
Billy Cox, a spokesman for the USDA, said the government is following Congress’ mandate in what foods are covered, including the decision to exclude processed foods.
But there are some who have concerns over the new labeling rule.
Deborah White, chief legal officer for the Food Marketing Institute, a retail trade group, said her group has long raised concerns about what the rules cover — chicken but not turkey, for example, and supermarkets but not butcher shops. “We were concerned about this law from the outset because it doesn’t make a lot of sense in certain ways,”
Retailers will have 6 months to totally grasp the new law and come into compliance with it.
