So Many Protein Supplements, Which Ones To Take?

Posted on 23 November 2008 by Ace

Now a days they are a lot of different protein supplements out there to take. Most of them aren’t too expensive and are a great way to feed your muscles, quickly, after a tough workout. Sometimes though with all the different choices out there it can be hard to decide which one to take. I have heard some say that Whey protein is the best protein for the muscles after a tough workout, and I have heard others say that egg proteins are the best. From the research I have done it appears to me that Whey Protein is the best for you especially after a workout, but egg proteins are a close second.

Whey proteins are very digestible and have a better amino acid profile than egg proteins. What that means is the body can absorb and utilize whey protein faster then egg proteins or any other protein. It is for this reason that Whey Protein is considered the king of all proteins for most lifters. But, it is important to note that not all Whey Proteins are the same, be sure you are taking micro filtered Whey in order to get the full benefits from it. There are also two different types of Whey, Isolates and Concentrates. Whey isolates are sub-fractions of whey that are absorbed very quickly into the system, which is great for right after your workout when your body is in major need of amino acids. But it might not be a good idea to take Whey isolates during other parts of your day because at that point your body won’t be in need of all those amino acids. So it is probably best to take Whey isolates after you workout and stick to Whey concentrates for later in the day use since they possess more health enhancing properties.

Eggs, the second best, is absorbed a little slower then Whey but not much. But, since it is absorbed slower it is perfect for during the day use and I find personally can be easier to have on the go. I like to hard boil a few eggs and take the yoke out to get ride of the high cholesterol and pack them with my daily lunch, then I take them right after I workout on my way to work. This way I don’t have to pack a mixer and make a shake after my workout. I can just eat a few egg whites and be on my way.

There are other types of protein sources such as milk, soy and meat, but Whey and Eggs are the quickest to get absorbed and used in the body so I believe any supplement you take should possess either one of these two proteins to be the most effective. Remember no matter what you take, try to take it as soon as possible after your workout and about an hour before bed, since you will be sleeping and putting nothing in your body for 8 hours. Taking the proper supplements will give you the edge to hit your fitness goals.
